When I say the phrase "Geek Mecca" I am of course referring to the biggest convention for everything comic, movies, television, and of course, pulp. The San Diego Comic Book Convention International is the place for exciting news about the latest happenings in pop and pulp culture, and this year, things seem to be heating up with all tickets selling out well before the doors open.
In the past, the convention was always busy but never sold out; tickets still being sold at the door. It wasn't until 2007 did comic-con sell out of 4-Day passes. Last year, the convention was filled up around a few weeks before the event. Now, nearly a month and a half before the festivities begin, all 4-day and single day passes are gone, making this year the fastest selling comic-con, and possibly the most crowded.
One question is aroused through the thick of it all. As comic-con grows, the experience changes. The past couple of years have experienced long lines to panels and elbow to elbow grinding on the show floor. Popularity has spiked for the well known convention bringing in a more diverse crowd. Comic-con was once for enthusiast, but with underground entertainment becoming mainstream media, everyone seems to want in on the fun. Is this necessarily a good thing or is it watering down the beloved celebration of pulp culture? It will be interesting to see what types of announcements, publicity and crowds will be there this year.
Comic-Con 2009 opens it's doors for a sneak preview July 22, and continues to July 26th.
